NYC with rascals in tow

by Matt MooneyApril 24, 2010

Recently, Ginny & I have taken to referring to Hazel & Anders as, “the rascals”- you’ll notice there is no “little” in there, and that is no mistake.  We all leave tomorrow (Sunday) headed to Manhattan.  We’re thrilled that our friend, Becky, is joining us on the trip- although none are quite as happy as Hazel is about this fact; we can’t say “New York” without her saying “Becky”.

We have gotten ample opportunity to explain the difference between “honored” & “excited” as we have discussed going on the Today Show on Monday.  It is not exciting.  It is an honor.  It is always a precarious scenario when you are asked to share the single most difficult thing you have experienced.  But we are definitely thankful and compelled as we have seen the impact of doing so in remarkable ways.

If you’re prone to do so, we welcome a prayer asking that the time would be what it is meant to be.  We do not set some agenda or have talking points or whatever, it is live TV, and so you just hope you don’t get sick and that your zipper is up.  But we really do desire to speak clearly and honestly of what we have experienced.

We’ve been told that our segment will be on the air sometime between 8:10-8:45am; this will be the case no matter what time zone you are in.  With that said, I have a sneaking suspicion that we each might be holding a tired child.  And a tired Hazel can wreak some serious havoc.  Oh well, my attitude is…you invited us, and here we are.

We will be in New York until Thursday.  The schedule is packed full of meaningful occassions:

  • Sunday- travel to NYC
  • Monday- Today Show
  • Tuesday- Ginny’s birthday (we now celebrate on this day- her 1/2 birthday)
  • Wednesday- 9th anniversary
  • Thursday- travel home

We’ll try to post some pictures along the way and I’m sure we’ll be updating fb & twitter.

If you’ve got a question for Meredith, Al, Matt  & the gang- send them on.  I doubt we’ll ask, and I doubt they’ll answer, but, hey, it’s fun to pretend.

I don’t have a question, but wanted to say that your story has inspired me. My son, Lane, was diagnosed with Full Trisomy 18 at three days old. While trying to take care of my fragile son, I also was researching this chromosome disorder I had never heard of….which brings me to your video. My son is now 16 months old and is thriving, but it was your family that gave me the strength to continue to fight to give my son the best quality of life. Thank you!

Yea Lane! That is awesome. We celebrate his life with you.

Uh, I am prone to do so as a matter of fact. New site is slick man. I am “excited” about your “honor” of being in NYC at the Today Show. Questions? No questions. Tell Matt I loved him in “Land of the Lost,” especially the end, tell Al that my neck of the woods are some of the best woods on earth and to stay black brotha, and tell Natalie that Marriage Ref is sinking ship and she needs to jump first.
No worries, you are a seasoned veteran now. Just picture Jesus himself sitting in with a “I love NYC” shirt. That will ease things.

    Hi Ginny and Matt,

Watched your lovely family on the Today show as I was feeding my almost 6-month old and had been contemplating/stressing about how to entertain my almost 2-year old this Monday afternoon. Needless to say, your story and joyful attitude instantly brought a new perspective to the day. It also made me wonder if and hope that I could approach the good times and the not-so-good times equally with a sense of gratitude and wonderment. It looks like you have a similar juggling act to my own with two small fries in the house, so I’m sure you can relate to the daily struggles or difficult moments that can sometime overwhelm you, causing you to lose sight of the beauty of it all (it is admittedly harder to see the beauty when you haven’t slept nor showered in two days : )

Anyways, I know I will remember you and 99 balloons for a long time. I have a feeling I might be a better mommy for it. Thank you for sharing your story, I will definitely read through your archives and catch up.

Congratulations on your beautiful family, hope NYC was a fun trip for all!

I just saw you guys on The Today Show. I am so happy for you – had followed your story with little Eliot for a time – and did not know that you had two additional beautiful children :-). Wonderful blog (I, too, do a parent blog – have a couple kids close in age like you do). Anyway – nice job on the show – just visited your 99 Balloons site – I’m reading off and on (I do love the community of parent bloggers I’ve “met” – all with different stories).

Y’all did great and so did your beautiful children! I hadn’t heard your story so I was glad I caught you on the Today show as I am on maternity leave with my 6 week old (or 48 day old)!

My 5 year old daughter and I watched your story on “Today” this morning. What a beautiful picture of life! I went to your blog, because I was curious…those beautiful smiles of yours contained the joy of Jesus and I just had to know…and I was right. You were the faces of Jesus without being blatent…the Holy Spirit in me recognized the kindred spirit in you. Thank you for choosing life and for choosing to tell your story. God has certainly redeemed the time for you and your lovely family of five, and I pray He will continue to bless your endeavors to share Him with others as Jesus did — by your actions and your sweet, sweet spirit. People will be drawn to you, so “be prepared, both in season and out of season.” I know you will.

    God bless.

Seeing your story on the Today show brought back memories of the little boy that we lost in July 2000. You were so blessed to have Eliot for all of that time. Our Jack passed before he ever got to breathe. Like you, we have been blessed twice again since he left us;Madeline is 8 and Willie just turned 2. May God continue to bless and watch over you all, as you continue to help others in need.
