A response to Patty

by Matt MooneyAugust 17, 2012

I make it a point to not respond to idiots who profess Christ.  There are not enough hours in a day, and I get in all a dither and my blood boils and that can’t be good, so I steer away from attempting to set straight blowhard losers who hide behind a Jesus they obviously do not care enough to listen to.

And if you think I am too hard and ungraceful, then you most likely have a point, and all I can offer up is that I am a work in progress. That and none of my words thus far have included swear words, which is on par with walking on water in the aftermath of watching this:

The only way I can continue not to cuss is to write a letter to this man whose eyes looked closed even when I think they were not.

Dear Pat,

I want to hate you for your misrepresentation of the Jesus that I know.  The one who called me and my wife this year to travel to Ukraine in order to bring a little girl named Lena back home and into our family.  Lena has brain damage.  Lena was malnurished.  I do not know if she was sexually abused, but the possibility is real and it does keep me up at night.  She doesn’t talk; she doesn’t walk (although she’s trying and getting closer every day).

You know what, I guess you’re right, the world will probably call her weird.
She flails her arms and makes various noises that draw stares.  She rocks sometimes.
But I call her daughter.  And only Jesus could birth the love that I have for her.

That’s what He does, you know.  He loves those whom the world deems weird- the outcasts, the lowly.  Therefore, I know he must love you.  And, from where I sit, that is truly an incredible thing.  I will say a prayer for your soul, and ask that he help me to have some portion of His love for you; for I have none on my own accord.  It seems to me that there must certainly be a ring of hell looping your talking head on a large screen tv….but I digress.

I am so happy that you do not represent Christ to me.  That I have people in my life who love Lena just as I do.  Happy to know others who show up in their few off-work moments to serve and love children with disabilities.  Those who, unlike you, point me to Jesus instead of away from Him.  Be careful Pat, I have learned beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus loves these little ones in a way I have never known before witnessing it.  In fact you are so far off that I do fear that you may hear, “depart I never knew you”.  I will pray for you, Pat, because Jesus won’t let me hate you.  He’s good isn’t he?

Sincerely

Matt Mooney

I have no words. But you did a pretty dang good job of expressing it…

I am just stunned! I can’t believe he actually said that. Wow!

    Matt,

You are stronger than I am for even watching the video. I saw it when it started to circulate and just couldn’t watch for the reasons you enumerate in your well worded response.

I have enough things to elevate my blood pressure.

What does really, truly dumfounds me is that his ‘message” will reach millions. That it is out in the “air” now forever. How tragic.

But then I force myself to remember that is not by might, power or “market share” that we prevail, but in humility, obedience and love. All the things I see, and others see, your family doing in loving Lena, each other and Pat Robertson.

All this is to say that I really, truly believe that one Mooney family can counter an army of blowhard, meglomaniacal, venom spewing wolves in Italian made “shepherd” suits.

    I really do.

Well, at least he got one thing right.

Unbelievable…there is nothing attractive to his representation of Christ. We don’t need to give other folks reasons for not following Jesus…it is so sad…so harsh

Oh Matt I am so sorry! How insensitive that came across. I would like to add that yes a man does not have to take on “problems” you get that he called children problems right ? But what man would take on loving children that are not his is a man I would be privileged to know and have actions that speaks louder than words. We need more of that ! Love and prayers Phoebe

More people should be drawn to the light of Christ that comes from you and your family than from the faux lighting that comes from his representation of Christ on his show. How sad it is to know that people watch his show every day and believe what he says just because he is Pat Robertson. In Matthew we are taught to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us….Mr. Robertson, I pray for God to change your heart to an understanding of his true and unconditional love. May God’s peace be on you and your family!

Well written Matt. Keep up the good fight. You and Ginny have inspired me so much. Because of Eliot and the way you guys loved, I am no longer afraid of the future. God Bless.

Did you send that letter? I sure hope so. Talk about dragging the “C” word through the dirt. He has no idea what an incredible blessing these children are.
