it’s still thanksgiving ’round here

by Matt MooneyNovember 28, 2011

We loaded up the newly-named Big Red (our new-to-us Toyota minivan) and headed to Louisiana for a Thanksgiving in the Delta.  We ate turkey and I got to the see the Hog football team re-define Black Friday.

And somewhere in the chaos that was our Thanksgiving- we got it.  The email we had awaited since we started this process a year ago.  We received our date of appointment, which in non-adopter world means…..we’re going to get Lena!

We leave Saturday or Sunday- and yes, that means we don’t currently have our flight tickets, and yes that means it’s crazy-go-nuts in these parts.  We have about 6 days to figure out a year’s worth of drama.  But, we’re going and we’re ecstatic.  And, it’s officially no longer hyperbole, we could not do this thing without the amazing community of support we have.

If you’re a prayer type person.  Here you go.  If, instead, you’re a warm wishes type of person, well thanks- cause it’s colder than a witch’s…nose in Ukraine at this time of year.  We sincerely ask for your prayers as we embark on the next leg of this journey.

In particular, we will be in Ukraine for approximately 35 days.  Yep, efficient does not seem to translate.  Therefore, we will miss our kids more than I can say; but we leave our kids to go get our kid.  There will be a rag-tag group of lovers in our stead and we trust them immensely.  It is our hope and prayer that our kids would adjust well and take it easy on this bunch.  All involved will be troopers- kids included- and we appreciate all of you who are making this possible.  We have had folks give money, time, prayer and support all along the way, and all we can seem to muster is thank you, and it falls woefully short of what we seek to convey.

Another specific request would be for Lena’s long journey home.  She will turn 5 on December 12th, and has spent very little time of her life outside the walls of her current home.  As she is immobile and non-verbal, the trip home presents some challenges, and it is tough to know how she will react.

Suffice it to say, that 18 hours in the air, in tight quarters with others, is not the preferred place to conduct the experiment of how she will handle all of it.  So, please pray for our travel home.  Specifically, that she would be filled with peace and we would be filled with wisdom as to what she needs.

We are so honored and excited to began this new chapter of our family with her.  We are not so naive as to think that the challenges are behind us now- truly they have just begun.  But we have never seen God more clearly than when we are outsized by what lies before us.

When we are weak, He is strong.

May we see his strength in days ahead.

Words escape me, so very thrilled for all of you. My prayer is that each moment is so filled with peace and joy for you that these 35 days seem like a blink of an eye and sooner than you can imagine your home may be filled with those you most love and be overlooked by the sweetest angel most have ever known. Love you guys so much, anticipating updates, and so grateful that our God is so mighty, faithful, and full of love.

Yes! I can’t contain my joy right now. Praise Jesus for that sweet little gal and her loving new family. And, oh, does that little anchor sweater gets me every time.
If childcare ever falls through, let me know. I can be in Fayetteville so quick with crafts and healthy snacks and lots of awkward kisses for your two littles.

WHOOOOO HOOOOO! I know that the Father is whispering to Lena’s heart as He prepares her for the journey home. We stand with you in prayer. You all know this and live this so beautifully, but You are being entrusted with one so dear to Him. Such an indescribable gift. We rejoice with you!
